Lester H. LaCombe died peacefully Dec. 27, 2010 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center after a period of failing health. He lived and loved with his whole heart which is evidenced by the legacy he left behind.

He was born March 31, 1927 in Augusta, the son of George and Adeline Thompson Lacombe. One of 12 children, when he was old enough, he set out to travel. He rode the rails, drilled oil in Texas and was a long haul truck driver. A World War II veteran, he served in the Merchant Marines, and was self employed many years as a junk dealer. Lester was pleased to recently receive his local preacher’s license under the auspices of the Belfast Church of the Nazarene.

He met and married Catherine M. Nystrom on June 12, 1950. One year later they started their family that eventually grew to be eight children. They were married for 60 years.

He was a long-time member of the Nazarene church and through the years he mentored many young Christians helping them to find Jesus. His love for his Lord was marked by the unconditional love he showed to all privileged to know him.

He is predeceased by his parents, four brothers, five sisters and and two grandchildren; Mary Elizabeth Harrison and Clinton Graves. Lester is survived by his wife, Catherine, of Rockland; eight children, Rev. Lester A. LaCombe and his wife Polly of Thomaston, Rev. Samuel LaCombe and his wife Ann of Windham, Robert Lacombe and his wife Maxine of Rockland, Rev. Charles LaCombe and his wife Rev. Lisa LaCombe of Thomaston, Rev. John LaCombe and his wife Wanda of Waldoboro, Eneeda Peirce and his husband Arthur ‘Sparky’ of Brunswick, Beverly Nichols and her husband Gerald of Rockland, Rev. Mary Wiebe and her husband Mark of Rockland; 18 grandchildren, Lester H. LaCombe, II and his wife Tilly, Joseph LaCombe, Rebecca Brown and her husband Peter, Stephen Wallace and his wife Tina, Aaron Wallace and his wife Gaulaug, Jessica Harrison and her boyfriend Tom Murphy, Lonnie Harrison, Samuel LaCombe and his wife Julie, Wendi Hasler and her husband Ethan, Robert LaCombe Jr. and his wife Rebecca, Nicholas Graves, Charles E. ‘Chuckie’ LaCombe, Catherine Roberts and her husband Adam, Matthew Schesser, Benjamin Schesser, Caleb Schesser, Caitlin Schesser, Grace LaCombe Jameson, Jamie Armstrong and her husband James; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters Doris Norwood of Bath, Bernice ‘Honeygirl’ Dickinson of Skowhegan and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service followed by visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 30 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A celebration service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31 at the Belfast Church of the Nazarene, 95 Swan Lake Ave., Belfast. The Rev. Cecil Jones will officiate. Interment will be in the spring at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Belfast Church of the Nazarene, 95 Swan Lake Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.
