One woman was treated and released from Waldo County General Hospital Tuesday morning, Jan. 4, after the car she was riding in was involved in an accident on Back Belmont Road.

Michelle Christian, 48, was a passenger in a 1997 Jeep that was being operated by 59-year-old Diane Wilson of Belfast when the vehicle was involved in a two-vehicle crash, according to Belfast Patrolman Eric Kelley. Christian was transported by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries. As of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Kelley said Christian had been released from the hospital.

Kelley said the accident occurred when Wilson was preparing to turn into a driveway on Back Belmont Road. Wilson quickly hit her brakes in an attempt to make the turn, Kelley said. Meanwhile a pickup truck operated by 50-year-old Terry Kinney of Belfast was approaching Wilson’s vehicle from behind.

Kinney, who was towing an unloaded trailer, was unable to stop in time to avoid striking Wilson’s Jeep. The impact drove the Jeep off the road and into a ditch, where it rolled on its side.

Kelley said in addition to Wilson’s quick use of her brakes, the road was slick due to remaining icy spots and the recent snowfall.

Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $2,500 apiece.
