Two of three may not be bad, but three of four is better.

That certainly was the case for the Mount View wrestling squad as the Mustangs beat three teams in recent tri-meets. Mount View defeated Lee 66-0 and host Woodland 54-12 Jan. 8 and downed Oxford Hills of South Paris 42-30 and lost to host Skowhegan 57-19 in a Jan. 5 meet.

“Obviously, our numbers helped us considerably against the three teams we
defeated,” said Mustang coach Hamilton Richards. “And it’s nice not being on the receiving end of those types of defeats like we were a few years ago when we were fielding only 3-7 wrestlers on the mat.”

Hamilton said the recent meets were, overall, not a bad showing for his team.

Against Oxford Hills and Skowhegan, he said he learned his team needed to work on their cardiovascular strength.

“For me, the biggest take-away — considering the teams we faced, was our improving technique and definitely improving cardio,” he said.  Richards added that Mark Dolloff and Tim Abbotts’ improvements paid off. Even Devan Fuller, who lost, gave an extra boost in the second and third period.

“This had been an area where the kids have been struggling, so it’s nice to see them finally getting an advantage when the match gets into the third period,” the coach said. “In the past, our conditioning was one of our hallmark traits; I think we are slowly getting back to where I want to be.”

Mount View’s matches against Woodland and Lee were lopsided, teamwise, but Hamilton said the both foes had quality wrestlers. He added that the teams let the ‘Stangs have as many exhibition matches as they wanted, which gave both teams a chance to test their mettle.

Richards said after his grapplers “practically got ‘head-and-armed’ to death” against Belfast and Brewer in an early meet this season, they improved this time around.

“Fuller put a big smile on my face for executing some textbook head-and-arm counters against a formidable Lee Academy opponent,” the coach said. “Devan put the kid on the mat every time he even thought about running the head and arm … and that’s what I want to see.”
