Eleanor Nelson Dorr, 84, died peacefully at her home in Lincolnville Center Jan. 11, 2011, leaving this earth to enter glory with her savior, Jesus Christ.

Eleanor was born at home in Thomaston March 12, 1926, to Erick Elmer and Ellen Harjula Nelson. She was a graduate of Thomaston High School and Gorham State Teachers College. She received a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono.

Eleanor taught at a one-room school on the St. George River Road before going to college. Many of her students were her Harjula cousins, some of whom liked to escape out the window. She was a teacher until retirement and also taught in Westbrook, Brunswick, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Warren.

Eleanor married David Paulsen Dorr, who she had known from childhood, at the Thomaston Baptist Church Dec. 23, 1950. Together they lovingly raised their three children, Erick, Rebecca and Patricia. Eleanor returned to teaching full time in Fort Lauderdale when her youngest child entered school.

In 1966 Eleanor and family moved back to Maine and resided for many years on Pearl Street in Camden. Eleanor was active in church affairs wherever she and David resided. They later built their retirement home in Lincolnville overlooking Norton Pond to be near Becky and Bruce and help babysit their grandsons.

After retiring, Eleanor and her husband enjoyed many happy winters in Homosassa, Fla. They loved boating on the river, watching the manatees and other marine life, birding, going dancing and playing cards with friends. Eleanor especially enjoyed playing Scrabble with her daughters.

Eleanor was a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association, the Lincolnville Women’s Club, Bayshore Baptist Church, the Finnish Congregational Church, the Finnish-American Society and the Maine Right to Life.

She is survived by her husband David, with whom she had just celebrated 60 years of marriage; her children and their spouses, Erick and Naomi Dorr of Thomaston, Becky and Bruce Richards of Lincolnville and Patty and David Fernald of Fort Kent; her grandchildren, in whom she took great delight, Monica Dorr and her companion Vance Bailey, Jesse and Sam Richards, Ben Fernald and David Fernald and his wife Christina; her step-grandchildren, Bruce and Sean Richards and their families and Sunday Richards White and her husband. She loved spending time with and was very proud of her loving great-grandchildren, Michaela and Damian Benner, as well as Dominick, Brianna and Ericka Bailey.

A funeral service was Monday, Jan. 17, at the Finnish Congregational Church in South Thomaston. The Rev. Russell Bailey officiated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bayshore Baptist Church, P.O. Box 66, Lincolnville, ME 04849; or the Finnish Congregational Church, P.O. Box 128, South Thomaston, ME 04858.
