Robert G. Mercier, 77, of Searsport, passed away peacefully in the presence of family, Jan. 17, 2011. He was predeceased by his wife Jane in 2007.

Bob was a true patriot, dedicated to his country in honor and in service in the United States Air Force for 20 years and a veteran of the Korean War. Before joining the Air Force, he served with the United States Coast Guard on the crash boats based in Sandwich where he met his future wife. They traveled the country, family in tow, during his tenure with the Strategic Air Command Minuteman Missile Squadron.

Upon his retirement from the USAF, the family moved to Monument Beach where Bob became an officer with the Department of Natural Resources in the Town of Bourne. In 1982 Bob retired, again, and moved to Searsport, where he and Jane opened an antique gift shop. After 17 years in the receiving department of Hamilton Marine, Bob retired — again — in the summer of 2010.

Bob was the Past Commander and Chaplain of American Legion Post No. 157 in Stockton Springs and a member of the Mariner’s Lodge No. 68, A.F. & A.M. in Searsport. Bob’s passion in life, besides his family, was cars. He restored a 1932 Chevy that was his pride and joy, displayed at several area car shows.

Bob will be remembered for his wit, kindness and speaking his mind. “If you don’t want a truthful answer, you shouldn’t ask the question,” was his motto.

He is survived by his daughter Chrystal and her husband John LaPine of West Barnstable, Mass., daughter Holly and her husband Ken Harris of Miami, Fla., son Scot Mercier and his wife Sandy of Searsport, and his son Keith Mercier and his wife Bethe of Bangor. He is also survived by grandchildren Nichole, Joshua, Benjamin, Lindsey and Cailee.

Services will be at Safe Harbor Church, Route 1, Searsport, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 407, Belfast, Maine 04915.

Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass., at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 31 West Main St., Searsport.
