Police have charged a local man with stealing several chain saws from a Monroe property last spring and also with stealing a truck in Troy in December.

Smith L. Bickford, 48, was arrested Jan. 11 on one Class C theft charge and also on a charge of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.

According to a press release from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, three Jonsered chain saws were reported stolen from a property on Jackson Road in Monroe May 27, 2010.

Each of the saws was valued at about $766, according to the press release.

Additionally, Bickford was charged with the theft of a 1987, two-wheel drive Ford pickup from a Bog Road property in Troy. That theft was reported to police Dec. 8, 2010.

The press release from the Sheriff’s Office states the pickup truck had been sitting at the property in Troy for a period of time, and it appears that thieves backed a dual-wheel vehicle up to the truck and “loaded it onto another vehicle and drove away with it.”

“This type of theft has been occurring in other areas where the thieves would back in and load vehicles onto a larger truck and drive away with them,” the press release states.

Detectives with Waldo County Sheriff’s Office are working with their counterparts in Penobscot County, the press release states, as similar thefts have been reported in Dixmont and Newburgh.
