Students in Meghan Baldridge’s fourth-grade class at Stockton Springs Elementary School recently spent some time learning about recycling. They then used an assignment on how to write a business letter as an opportunity to have a discussion on how to create a persuasive piece of writing. The following letters are what they came up with:

We need to get more people and schools to recycle. An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years [from now].

If we don’t recycle the world will turn into a dump. The garbage will pollute the air when it is burned. If we recycle newspaper so that we don’t waste trees. The more trees we have the more air we have.

If we don’t recycle we will live in a place where there is garbage all over the place, so please recycle.

Sincerely,

Kaden

There is a problem with not enough people recycling. If we all recycle our newspapers we could about save 250,000,000 trees a year.

So I think that we should fix the problem so our world in the future doesn’t turn into a giant dump. So if that happens in the future our world won’t be a giant dump.

So we do not want to ignore the problem, because if we do, well, our world will be coming to a big disaster, and we do not want that to happen. If we stick to the plan we could get people recycling left and right, and we will have a clean Earth.

Sincerely,

Hannah

People need to recycle. We don’t do enough of it. I’m concerned about our Earth. We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum pop cans every year.

So please recycle. Because if you, me, and our country don’t recycle the Earth will be a big pile of trash.

So please join us in a recycling year, which will soon spread across the world and soon all the states will recycle and all the years will be recycling years.

Sincerely,

Terry

Not enough people recycle. To produce each week’s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. If all our newspapers was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees.

If people don’t recycle, then the whole world will become a dump. We can help stop that by doing the 3 R’s [reduce, reuse and recycle] and starting a group to help pick up trash. If we do all these things one at a time then we can make a big difference to our environment.

People are not recycling enough, and are throwing trash on the streets. If we recycle and pick up trash where ever we see it, then we can change the world. Also it will be a better environment.

Sincerely,

Angela

People need to recycle. We don’t do enough. More schools need to recycle, as well as businesses, and any job in this world.

If we recycle we can stop landfills from filling too quickly. If we don’t recycle we will need to make more landfills will, and there will be less land.

We need to recycle more and we will save land, money, and our earth. Save the animals, your money and land.

Sincerely,

Nevada

We need to recycle more because the Earth’s land is running out of space to live! We’ll be covered in trash!

If we recycle we will be able to have room for houses. If every American recycles just one tenth of their news papers, we could save about 25,000,000 trees a year! Recycling creates more jobs in our state than trash does!

If you love wild and open scenery, please recycle! If you love nature, recycle! If your tired of paying for garbage to be cleaned up, recycle! And if we don’t recycle, some incinerators burn the trash and it will pollute the air! So please if you want to make the world a better place, recycle!

Sincerely,

Kimber

We need to recycle more. Recycling just one edition of the New York Times would save 75,000 trees! If we recycled just one-tenth of our nation’s newspapers we could save 25,000,000 trees a year.

You should recycle because we want our landfills to last longer so we don’t need to use more land to make new ones. If you recycle we will have more room in the world. If the problem is ignored we will be under a pile of trash.

If we recycle we will have wildlife like fish, deer, bear, and moose. The world should recycle so we can be green forever.

Sincerely,

George

Even though we recycle not a lot of people follow through with it. I think recycling should be a law. I have seen people throwing stuff away like paper and bottles. Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Most of them are thrown away!

Also I think canteens should be used instead of plastic bottles. I think canteens are better than plastic bottles because you don’t use as much plastic and they can be reused. If our landfills get so big, and so polluted it will make the trees fall down, and that area will be a bad place. That could happen everywhere else.

People need to follow through with recycling so our planet will be able to sustain life for longer. America could be an example to the rest of the world.

Sincerely,

Noah

We need to recycle more. We use 80,000,000,000 soda cans a year. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours!

Please don’t trash things or little thinks that can be recycled. If we recycle we will pollute less, save energy, extend the life of landfills, take away less land for landfills, save resources, and creates jobs. It may take people more time to recycle than just trashing things, but isn’t it worth it? Recycling saves the Earth. Don’t send our resources to landfills, RECYCLE them!

Sincerely,

Chad

People are not recycling enough. If every American recycled one-tenth of their newspapers we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year!

When people throw away recyclable stuff in the trash it takes space in landfills. And then we have to build more landfills and that pollutes more. It puts toxic chemicals in the water. Recycling should be a law!

We need to tell people that we need recycle more or the work will be bad, really, really, bad. When trash is burned it pollutes the air, and trash in landfills pollutes the soil and water.

Sincerely,

Jack

There’s a problem, not enough people are recycling, which means there are more recyclables going into the landfill and filling it up and ruining the Earth. That means the next generations are not going to see the beauty of the Earth because there’s nothing left to see except for landfills and landfills all over. Here is one of a lot of problems with plastic, Americans use about 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour, and most of it is getting thrown away! Plastic is not the only problem, paper is too. If we don’t recycle paper then we have to cut down more trees to make more paper. Then if we cut down all the trees we won’t have any oxygen.

If we can get our town in a recycling mode hopefully other towns will start recycling too, because they see us doing it. Our town will have to pay some money to get recycling trucks to pick up the recyclables from driveways. But if this problem is ignored our town will have to pay for than more than for for the trucks to operate. Our town will have to pay to open a new landfill where some of the things you can recycle are brought.

If we go to certain redeemable places we can get back money for our school, library, and for other things our town needs. Recycling will help our town, because a small town can make a big difference.

Sincerely,

Mary Brenna

People need to Recycle. The landfills are overloaded with garbage. Recycling saves soil, water, and air from pollution. When we recycle we will slow the build up of trash in the landfills.

We need to spread the word of recycling around the worlds, in schools, at work, and even at home. If people ignore recycling the landfills will overload.

So can you just recycle? It will save the earth.

Sincerely,

Anthony

There is a problem, not enough people are recycling. We need more people to recycle. Did you know only 27% of the newspapers produced in America are recycled. If all of our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year! Also, did you know that when you smell a dump [what] you’re actually smelling is the paper in the dump.

There is away that we can get more people to recycle. We can tell them to recycle their cans, paper, and bottles. If more people start recycling the world will treat you the way you want to be treated.

Sincerely,

Natalie
