The Belfast Area High School Outing Club will hold its third annual ice-fishing derby on Swan Lake to raise funds for the club. The derby will take place Saturday, Feb. 26.

The weigh-in ends at 5 p.m. the day of the derby and the weigh-in station will be in the parking lot across the road from the Swan Lake Grocery.

Participants can win cash prizes for three categories. There are first-, second- and third-place prizes for trout, salmon and togue. First prize wins $100, second wins $75 and third $50.

For the second year, Swan Lake Grocery is donating all prize money for the event and Jon Cox, who helps run the club, will donate a cord of wood for the raffle. Also, Blue Streak has donated $250 to help purchase an ice auger for the raffle, Because of that, proceeds from the event will go directly to the club.

Tickets are $5 and only one fish can be registered per ticket. If interested, participants also can purchase a ticket and not fish and still be eligible to win the ice auger, cord of wood or other prizes in the raffle.

Tickets can be purchased at various locations, including the Outdoor Sportsman in Northport, Belfast Variety on Route 52, Morrill General, Swan Lake Grocery, Dodge Corner bait shop at the Swanville/Searsport town line, Belfast Variety and BAHS.

“All-around it is a great event,” said club advisor Chris Bartlett. “The kids get to interact with the people fishing in the derby and award the prizes and the people get to meet the students that they are helping out. It really is a fun time. The event also helps out local businesses such as stores and bait dealers as well.”

The Belfast High School Outing Club was founded in 2001 and since then has been helping students become familiar with Maine’s natural resources.

“We felt it was important to expose students to as much as we could,” said Bartlett. “Living in Maine we truly do have a great wilderness playground in our backyard that many people travel to in order to experience it. We thought it was important students had an opportunity to do the same.“

Club members participate in various outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, skiing, ice fishing, canoeing and whitewater paddling.
