The Belfast fifth- and sixth-grade boys basketball travel team has had a successful first year in the Eastern Maine Basketball League, earning an 8-2 record and securing the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs that will begin Saturday, Jan. 29.

Belfast does not play this weekend having earned a bye, but will take part in the tournament the following weekend Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 5-6, which will be held at sites in both Hermon and Bangor. Belfast will first face sixth-seeded Newport, and should the locals win, will then face the winner between the No. 2 and No. 7 seeds in the semifinals.

If Belfast wins both of its postseason games, the Waldo County-based team will participate in the championship on Saturday, Feb. 12.

The Belfast squad is comprised of sixth-graders Nolan Woods, Garrett Hamlin, Zane Bielenberg, Josh Buker, Derrick Tyler and Tyler Macleod and fifth-graders Tyler Bartlett, Stanley Sturgis, Dean Grass, Sam Goguen, Dakota Doolan and Ricky Smith. The team is coached by Guy Hamlin, Penson Bartlett and Joe Woods.
