With plenty of ice cover, it is time to gear up and head to the ponds and lakes for ice fishing. If that sounds like fun, on Sunday, Jan. 30, the men’s auxiliary VFW 3108 in Belfast will host the second annual Waldo County ice-fishing derby.

The derby includes all legal waters in Swanville, Morrill, Belmont, Searsmont and surrounding areas in Waldo County. The weigh-in will be in the VFW Hall basement, 34 Field Street, in Belfast. The event is noon to 6 p.m.

Last year, a 4.5-pound togue won top prize.

“We had an absolute blast,” said organizer Scott Patton. He said there were 75-100 people in the VFW post by the end of the derby.

Tickets for the event are $3 for one fish and there is a one-fish limit. There also will be raffle tickets for sale. Those are three for $5.

There will be two 10-inch Jiffy ice augers given away at the end of the event: one for the largest fish, the other during the raffle. There are about 27 other raffle prizes, including gift certificates for Rollie’s Bar and Grill, area auto parts stores and Tozier’s Market in Searsport.

There also be a children’s class with a separate prize for competitors under age 16.

The event is sponsored by the men’s auxiliary and proceeds go to the veteran’s programs and charities.
