After a strong finish at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships two weeks ago, the Mount View cheering squad made the journey to the Bangor Auditorium in hopes of earning a top-six finish in Saturday’s Eastern Class B competition.

Despite finishing fifth in the KVACs Jan. 17 at the Augusta Civic Center, the Mustangs could not outscore the more talented field at “The Mecca” on Saturday and placed 11th among 12 teams in the regional championships.

Defending regional champion Hermon finished first with a score of 150.4, while the Mustangs scored 97.4 points. Mount View improved on its KVAC score despite the lower finish, scoring 96.6 at the conference championships.

The Hawks, along with Ellsworth, Presque isle, John Bapst of Bangor, Waterville and Nokomis of Newport all advanced to the Feb. 12 state final at the same venue; along with Western B champion Medomak Valley, Leavitt of Turner, Wells, Lisbon of Lisbon Falls, Poland and Mountain Valley of Rumford.

Team scores from Saturday’s Eastern Class B competition were: 1, Hermon, 150.6; 2, Ellsworth, 136.8; 3, Presque Isle, 123.9; 4, John Bapst, 120.5; 5, Waterville, 114.8; 6, Nokomis, 113.2; 7, Old Town, 111.5; 8, Bucksport, 103.7; 9, Caribou, 101.9; 10, Mount Desert Island, 101; 11, Mount View, 97.4; and 12, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, 94.
