The Belfast fifth- and sixth-grade boys basketball travel team has had a successful first year in the Eastern Maine Basketball League, and hopes it will culminate with a memorable finish.

The Waldo-County based squad finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and clinched the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, which began last weekend. After defeating No. 6 Newport 52-44 in the quarterfinals and No. 2 Mount Desert Island YMCA 43-34, Belfast has earned itself the right to compete in the EMBL championship game.

Belfast will face No. 1 MDI in the finals, which will tip off on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at University College of Bangor.

The Belfast squad is comprised of sixth-graders Nolan Woods, Garrett Hamlin, Zane Bielenberg, Josh Buker, Derrick Tyler and Tyler Macleod and fifth-graders Tyler Bartlett, Stanley Sturgis, Dean Grass, Sam Goguen, Dakota Doolan and Ricky Smith. The team is coached by Guy Hamlin, Penson Bartlett and Joe Woods.
