A pair of Midcoast Class C schools each hit the road for Monday contests, with both the Georges Valley girls and Searsport boys hoping to earn late-season victories.

The Buccaneer girls, in the midst of trying to earn one of the final playoff spots in Western Class C, pulled out a 55-46 win over Monmouth Academy; while the Viking boys dropped a 78-47 decision to playoff-bound Sumner of East Sullivan.

Both teams will play their final regular-season games on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The Vikings will travel to Katahdin, while the Buccaneers will host Lisbon of Lisbon Falls.

It may be the final home game in the history of the Georges Valley girls basketball program, as they will consolidate with neighboring Rockland District High School to form Oceanside High School next fall. The Bucs have a shot at hosting a regional prelim playoff game.


Georges Valley 55, Monmouth Academy 46 … At Monmouth Monday, the Buccaneers tipped over .500 on the season and continued to push toward the postseason with a nine-point win over the Mustangs. Monmouth led 11-6 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime, while Georges Valley took a 35-31 advantage after three quarters.

Jill Bradbury poured in 25 points to lead the Bucs, while Kennadi Grover added 17; Jennifer Denault, five; Katlyn Rich, four; and Colleen Haskell and Rachel Frye, both two.

For Monmouth, Kylie Kemp, Kristine Kahl and Sierra Spencer each scored eight points, while Molly Menice, Daisi Poole and Colby Wilson each added six; Kristi Hilton, two; and Danielle Burnham and Kelsie Hilton, each one.

The Buccaneers made 14-of-29 (48 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Mustangs were 8-of-15 (53 percent).

Georges Valley (9-8, 50.3086 points) is ninth in Western Class C, while Hall-Dale of Farmingdale (16-1, 114.1975 points) is first in the 19-team region. The top 10 teams qualify for postseason play.


Sumner 78, Searsport 47 … At East Sullivan, the Vikings were outscored 29-12 in the third quarter as the Tigers pulled away for their 14th win. Sumner led 17-11, 36-23 and 65-35 at the quarter breaks.

Rocky Faunce tossed in 16 points for Searsport, while Buddy Ellis added 14; Allen Connor, eight; Shane Seekins, five; and Dillan Moody and Jake Keniston, each two.

For Sumner, Brett Deniger scored 22 points, while Gabe O’Brien added 19; Brendan Tenney, 10; Tyler Martin, eight; Dillan Harmon, Joey Malloy and Xavier Tracey, all four; and Lucas Potter-Harmon and Justin Chipman, both two.

Searsport (4-13, 20.8333 points) is 13th in Eastern Class C, while Lee Academy (16-1, 102.3457 points) is first in the 10-team region. The top 10 teams qualify for postseason play.
