Ila E. Hartley, 76, died Feb. 4, 2011, at her home after a long illness.

Born in Monroe on July 2, 1934, she was the daughter of Nelson and Ida Philbrick Hood. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Monroe, and due to the location of the school in a hollow, always told her children that she really did “walk uphill both ways” when she went to school.

On Aug. 20, 1960, she married Alton A. Hartley. Mr. Hartley died in 2001.

In earlier years, Ila worked at a local poultry farm picking eggs, and in local seafood plants.

Primarily she was a stay-at-home mom, raising her family. Her greatest joy and accomplishment was her family and her grandchildren. She had what she called “her special grandchild,” Abbie, a little dog belonging to her grandchild, who was Ila’s constant companion.

She enjoyed doing puzzles, crosswords, listening to her favorite Christian broadcast radio and reading her Daily Bread.

She was looking forward to the birth of two more great-grandchildren in August.

Other than her husband, Ila was predeceased by a brother, Leander Hood; and a sister, Eva Knight.

She is survived by one son, Nelson C. Hartley of Hope; three daughters, Peggy E. Curit of Hope, Sandra L. Mansfield and her husband, Richard, and Nancy L. Hartley, all of Rockland; a brother, Robert Hood of Monroe; a sister-in-law, Goldie Hood of Monroe; nine grandchildren, BJ Curit, Priscilla Curit, Anthony Hartley, Vicki Hartley Dorr, Terri Hartley, Amanda Mansfield, Elizabeth Mansfield, Alexa Hartley Cameron and Christie Curit; four great-grandchildren, Lily Curit, Caspian Cameron, Alonna Dorr and Sadie Curit; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Friday, Feb. 11 from 2 to 3 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 3 p.m., at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate. Spring interment will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Monroe.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to assist the family, c/o Sandra Mansfield, 18 Bog Road, Rockland, ME 04841; or to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Pleasant St., Rockland, ME 04841.
