Police arrested a 35-year-old man on assault charges early Saturday morning following a standoff that lasted nearly five hours.

Sgt. Mike Field of the Maine State Police said officers responded to a Skyview Lane residence in Winterport shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a woman had been assaulted there.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the suspect, Joseph Chekovsky, had shut himself inside his residence and was “not willing to come out,” according to Field. Field said Chekovsky had a child in the residence with him during the standoff, but the child was not injured.

Field said the Maine State Police tactical team was called in as a precaution, because police had been told there were weapons in the residence, and the section of Route 1A near Skyview Lane was also shut down for a time.

Almost five hours after the standoff started, Chekovsky was reportedly arrested without incident at about 8:20 a.m. He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast, and a corrections officer there said Monday, Feb. 14, he was later released on $100 bail. According to police, Chekovsky is facing charges of domestic violence assault and domestic violence criminal mischief.

Officers from Waldo County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the incident in Winterport early Saturday morning, according to Chief Deputy Bob Keating.
