The Penobscot Bay YMCA Sailfish and Waldo County YMCA Bluefish made a splash the weekend of Feb. 26 at Husson University.

On Feb. 26-27, the Sailfish and Bluefish swimmers participated in the Bronze Classic 8-and-younger and senior championships. The Sailfish finished third and returned home with a top finisher.

The Sailfish finished third with 169 points, which was the highest team placement in recent history. Also, Sam Conlan, 8, won the 8-and-younger highest-points award in his age group.

The Mount Desert Island YMCA Sharks won the team competition with 409 points. Waldo County was fifth with 46 points.

Waldo County placed seventh in the girls event with 34 points and Penobscot Bay placed eighth with 30. In the boys event, the Sailfish finished fourth with 139 points and the Bluefish were seventh with 12 points.

It was the final competition and tune-up before the YMCA state meet at University of Maine in Orono the weekend of March 5.

Sam Conlan won the 8-and-under boys High Point Award as the top-performing swimmer in his age group. Conlan took five first-place wins in the 8 and under 100 freestyle, 25 butterfly, 25 free, 50 free, and 100 individual medley.

“Essentially, by winning the high-points trophy (and all those races), he is the Maine USA Swimming state champ for 8-and-under boys,” said Sailfish coach Hodding Carter.

According to the coach, Conlan was seeded first in his two individual races and as a member of a relay at the state championships.

Sailfish Hannah Homans, 14, set the Husson pool record for her age group in the 200 backstroke in 2:15.48 at the Bronze Classic meet.
