Belfast Garden Club’s popular annual Green Thumb Plant Sale will take place Saturday, May 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. at The Belfast Boathouse, 34 Commercial St., in Belfast. A wide array of annuals and perennials, gardening supplies and more will be available. The annual plant sale is a benefit for Belfast Garden Club activities in the community and a scholarship fund for higher education.

Area nurseries and greenhouses, as well as gardeners within the community will donate plants for the sale. Any gardeners dividing perennials or starting extra seedlings this spring are invited to consider donating them to the Belfast Garden Club Green Thumb Plant Sale. To donate, deliver the labeled and potted plants to the Belfast Boathouse the day before the sale, Friday, May 20, from 10 a.m. until noon. For questions about the plant sale, or alternative drop off options, call Corliss Davis at 930-3562.

Belfast Garden Club has promoted civic beautification and presented speakers to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening since 1929. Belfast Garden Club is responsible for maintaining more than 12 public gardens in the city.

This year, garden club members will continue work at the Grove Cemetery Chapel. In conjunction with the city of Belfast and a grant from the Golden Rule Foundation, the club has updated the hardscaping and planted 17 “Remembrance Trees,” made the chapel handicap accessible and provided an improved venue for services.

Belfast Garden Club hosts “Open Garden Days” all summer, gives a $1,000 scholarship to a college student each year, donates $500 to Troy Howard Middle School for the garden, donates $250 for gardening and related books to the library and another $250 for evening speakers there each year.

The club hosts monthly environmental and conservation talks as well as monthly speakers on garden-related topics at meetings. All meetings and talks are open to the public and new members are welcome year round. For more information visit
