Belfast Area High School’s jazz duo Necessary Measures was awarded the highest honors by the judges March 19 at the MDI 2011 Instrumental Jazz Festival.

Bass player Noah Fishman and alto/tenor saxophonist Jeremiah Kahn received the highest possible score of “1” for their jazz combo and took home a gold-plated plaque. Each also received a trophy for Outstanding Musician overall in their division on their respective instruments. They received silver trophies, with scores from the judges of 98, 97 and 93.

Necessary Measures was directed by Troy Howard Middle School band teacher Shawn Smith.

Sponsored by the Maine Music Educators Association, the 2011 State Instrumental High School Jazz Festival was the culmination of seven district competitions that occurred through February and early March.
