There were plenty of colorful costumes, familiar uptempo music and spectacular performances — including two from an accomplished Maine teenager — during The Skating Club of Maine Coastal Region’s final figure skating show of the season, “Let’s Dance,” Saturday, at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

This year’s theme featured styles of dance from around the world as interpreted on ice. The show featured all levels of skaters from the region in a variety of dance music, including jazz, tap, swing, modern, hip hop, line dancing, belly dancing, hula, tango, salsa and disco.

Music from films “Flash Dance,” “Footloose” and “Fame,” as well as artists Natalie Cole, Santana and Shakira, were some of the songs featured.

The synchronized skating team “Sub Zero” performed its colorful Indian-styled Bollywood routine. The group of 20 skaters is so popular that an Intro to Synchronized Skating group has formed and performed to an Irish step dancing number called “The Kerry Reel.”

Gemma Carter of Falmouth, the featured soloist, gave the audience at the rink plenty to cheer about with two amazing performances. Carter, an honors student, has been skating 10 years and is coached by Lynda Hathaway.

Carter is a Novice Ladies skater who has won 78 medals in competitions over the years. She also has competed in five regional competitions and won the gold medal last month in both Novice Ladies Short Program and Freestyle events at the Bay State Games. She is the first Maine skater to take gold in the history of those games.

The Skating Club of Maine is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching the sport of ice skating. Revision Energy, The Country Inn, Danica Candleworks, Hannafords and Tim Hortons are sponsors of the Learn to Skate and Synchronized Skating programs.
