A budding coalition of local groups are coming together for the purpose of getting signs posted at bus stops for the $1 Belfast Shopper Run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The coalition at present includes Waldo Community Action Partners, Belfast Area Transition Initiative and Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce.

Coalition organizer Miriam Watkins, a community activist with Belfast Area Transition Initiative, is heading up the effort. She cites her group’s ongoing efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels as the impetus for her actions.

“But there are other good reasons for taking the bus, including the rising cost of gasoline,” she says.

“Taking the bus would enable Belfast’s elderly citizens no longer able to drive to enjoy the products and services offered by local businesses,” Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce Director Jack Driscoll says. “I’m all for posting signs to make the bus route more accessible.”

Meanwhile, Watkins insists the Belfast Shopper Run is the best kept secret in Belfast.

“If we don’t use this bus service provided by Waldo Community Action Partners, we’ll lose it. I urge everybody to help us spread the word about the Belfast Shopper Run. Those who own and drive cars could leave them at home and take the bus in an effort to reduce our use of foreign oil and reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere,” Watkins says.

Groups or individuals interested in joining the coalition to get signs posted at bus stops in Belfast may contact Watkins at 338-5639.
