A near course record time, spectacular early-spring weather, a large field which included a bundle of former Rockland District High School students and terrific music from “Just Teachers” made Saturday morning’s fifth annual and final Tiger 5-Kilometer road race/walk an all-around blast.

A pair of Rockland runners, albeit 14 years apart in age, ruled the streets in the fundraising event for the Tiger track team.

Michael Bunker, 28, blistered the course in 15 minutes and 42 seconds, which was only two seconds off the mark set by Judson Cake of Bar Harbor, who crossed the 3.1-mile course in 15:40.

While Bunker left the field in his wake with a tremendous performance, a couple of local teenagers, Charlie Jones, 18, of North Haven (17:37), and Nick Anderson, 16, of Waldoboro (18:26) were the next two finishers among the 60 runners/walkers.

The first female finisher was Abby Hersom, 14, in 20:58.

The race began and ended in the RDHS parking lot. It was the final event due to the upcoming consolidation of RDHS and Georges Valley High School. The event may be continued with a different name in the future.

The runners who took part in Saturday’s event could not have asked for better weather. With the weekend full of clear, sunny skies and that winter chill seemingly long gone, 60 people participated.

The race raised $780, after expenses, said race organizer and RDHS track coach Jesse Bartke. He said it was a wonderful day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

“Our goal coming into this was to remind folks that this is fun,” he said, adding that as running becomes more popular it seems everyone is looking for a Boston Marathon qualifier to run or an age-group award, and the fact that running is pure, simple and fun can be forgotten.

Bartke feels the Tiger race provided something for everyone, awards for those who wanted them, but also fun, music, food and a chance for everyone to win prizes.

“I am really happy with the way things turned out and how much support we had from the community,” said Bartke.

The coach said the race could not have been possible without the support of the event’s sponsors; Elm Street Grille, FMC, Aqua ME, Domino’s Pizza, Rustica, In Good Company, Time Out Pub, Trillium Soaps, Green Thumb, Rockport Diner, MCN Coins, Sunfire Grill, Candy Harbor, Penobscot Bay YMCA and the Midcoast Recreation Center.

Notably, Brandon Waltz, who came up with the idea to hold a road race and organized the first event to raise money for the Tiger track team as a senior at the school in 2007, returned Saturday to participate in the final race. He now is a senior at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.
