Runners and walkers, both young and old, converged on Trackside Station on a brisk Saturday morning to take part in a 5-kilometer road race not only for their benefit, but for the good of a well-known, respected Midcoast resident as well.

The “Run For Phyllis 5K” proved a rousing success as more than $7,000 was raised for Phyllis Burrell, a Warren resident who is battling cancer. She was present at the race, which saw 238 runners and walkers pound the streets of the city.

Burrell is a well-known personal trainer at Mid-Coast Gym in Rockland. The business sponsored the event.

Michael Bunker, 28, of Rockland took first place, finishing in 15 minutes and 30 seconds over the 3.1-mile course. Nicole Green of Presque Isle was the first female finisher, clocking in at 21:53 for a 10th-place finish.

There were 67 runners and 171 walkers. The event raised more than $7,000.

Among the prizes were an annual membership to the Mid-Coast Gym, an annual membership to the Penobscot Bay YMCA, massages, gift cards for restaurants, small group personal training sessions with Stephanie Hiller, lobsters from Ship to Shore Lobster, Tim Horton’s gift packs and a remarqued print, “Blueberries,” from South Thomaston artist Ronald Frontin. The print is worth more than $2,000.
