The Belfast boys and girls tennis teams kicked off their 2011 seasons Monday against Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield, with both home squads picking up first wins of their respective campaigns.

The host Belfast girls upended the visiting Huskies 4-1, while the Lion boys were nipped on the road at Pittsfield by the Huskies 3-2.

Belfast girls 4, Maine Central Institute 1 … At Belfast, the Lions secured their first won of the season, defeating the Huskies in pro sets.

The individual results, with Lions listed first, were: In singles, Shashanna Mohl beat Megan Fowler, 8-0; Rosie LaCivita beat Nan Marmitana, 8-0; and Makaila Gould beat Vy Danl, 8-1.

In doubles, Sierra Warner and Elizabeth McAvoy beat Tuyen Tran and Lina Nguyen, 8-0; and Kristen Martin and Rachel Lewis lost to Emily Fung and Kylee Alton, 5-8.

Maine Central Institute boys 3, Belfast 2 … At Pittsfield, the Lions were nipped by the host Huskies in their first match of the season.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Jimmy Nealey lost to W. Chu, 1-6, 6-6 (7-9 tiebreaker); Tyler Martin lost to V. Hoang, 1-6, 3-6; and Taylor Peabody defeated J. Han, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

In doubles, Wes Sterrs and Windham Veevaert beat R. Kim and M. Wang, 6-3, 6-1; and Nathan Howard and Dominic Williams lost to A. Park and L. Tran 6-4, 6-6 (3-7 tiebreaker) and 4-6.
