The Friends of the Belfast Free Library group will hold its annual book sale from Wednesday, June 22 through Saturday, June 25.

On Wednesday, the hours will be 4-8 p.m. On that day only, current Friends members may purchase books at a 10-percent discount. Hours on the following days are: Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Offered for sale at this year’s sale are books of all types for all ages. Generally, hardcover and quality paperback books will sell for $1, and trade paperbacks will sell for 50 cents. In addition, there will be some audio books, CDs and DVDs. Some select books, priced accordingly, will be featured in the lobby.

Founded in 1992, the Friends membership assists the library in maintaining all of its services, and encourages community support of the library through contributions of books, money and volunteer time. The Friends promote the use of the library for the enrichment of life in the Belfast community. New members are always welcome. A single membership is $15, and a family membership is $20.

The primary fundraising efforts of the Friends include an annual membership drive, the book sale in June, monthly weekend book sales, and the Friends Book Sale cart located across from the circulation desk in the library. In addition, the group sponsors seasonal dessert card parties.

Funds raised by the Friends go toward the purchase of new books, program materials, multimedia resources and equipment. During the 2010-11 year, the Friends contributed to the computer upgrades for the Children’s room, including an interactive, early literacy station for beginning readers, and matched funds from a generous donor to update and add to the DVD collection.

Donations to the book sale are welcome. Call the library at 338-3884, ext. 10 first to determine what items are being accepted for the sale.

Organizers invite book buyers to come and get some great beach reading for the summer, or some woodstove reading for the winter.
