The downtown Galerie Dufour, 94 Main St., will jumpstart its exhibition season by hosting an opening reception with delectables Friday, June 17 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. “Back to Basics,” an all black and white photography exhibit featuring the human back, will remain on display until July 14.

“I’ve assembled about a dozen photographs that present the human back in a simple, elegant and graceful style,” said Charles Laurier Dufour, the artist and gallery owner.

Some of these images lean more toward the classic figure portrait and others toward the abstract. Some were shot indoors, some outdoors including one shot in the snow. One of the show’s images, “Before & After,” just received third place in the Black & White Category of “Through the Lens,” a fine art photography contest and exhibit that runs through July 16 at L/A Arts Gallery 5 in Lewiston.

“Back to Basics” is the first of five exhibitions that will comprise Galerie Dufour’s eighth year in Belfast. The remaining 2011 themed exhibits/dates are: “Clothed Nudes,” July 15 to Aug. 11; “Dreams and Dreamers,” Aug. 12 to Sept. 6; “Sticks and Stones,” Sept. 7 to Oct. 3; and “Coastal Curves 2011,” Oct. 4 to Thanksgiving. This year, Dufour also is one of the members of Art Space Gallery in Rockland.

Galerie Dufour’s June hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays plus 5:30 to 8 p.m. Fridays; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays; and variable on Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call 338-6448 or send email to Ample examples of Dufour’s artwork can be found at
