River Arts’ “Abstract” exhibition features 71 works by different 42 artists, including those from the Midcoast. The show, juried by Laurie E. Hicks, runs through July 15 at River Arts, 170 Main St./Business Route 1.

Hicks is curator of the Lord Hall Galleries and Professor of Art at the University of Maine, Orono. A curator of numerous exhibitions and senior editor of the journal Studies in Art Education, Hicks has been an exhibiting artist, organizer of several arts conferences and symposia, a recipient of many grants and awards and an accomplished author in the arts. She received her doctorate from the University of Oregon and has delivered presentations on the arts at scholarly events throughout the United States and abroad. She has been active in the National Association of Art Educators, the Maine Arts Education Association and Maine Arts Commission.

Midcoast artists whose work appears in the show include Petrea Noyes of Brooks, Joan Siem of Camden, Michael Donnelly of Rockland, Katherine Cartwright of Spruce Head, Marylin Quint-Rose of Tenants Harbor, Steve Mott and Dorothy Hughes of Union, Ralph Bush of Waldoboro, Lois Hill of Washington and Betsy Headley, Eric Leppanen and Lucinda Talbot of Belfast.

River Arts conducts open, juried, themed exhibitions every five weeks year-round, a member exhibition and the annual Lincoln Academy student exhibition. In addition to exhibitions, River Arts has a year-round schedule of classes, open studios, lectures, poetry readings and special events as well as a full schedule of artist directed exhibitions at the River Arts Gallery II on Route 1.
