The 2011 Dana M. Whitten Scholarship has been awarded to Catherine Richardson.

Catherine has devoted much of her time to children, including tutoring preschoolers and directing plays at the Marsh River Theater. She is also an excellent student, graduating near the top of her class. She is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Education at the University of Maine at Machias this fall.

The Dana M. Whitten Scholarship is a $1,000 prize awarded annually to a graduating senior from Belfast Area High School who has demonstrated a strong commitment to caring for and improving the lives of children. It was established in October 2006 to commemorate Dr. Whitten’s 30 years of dedication to the children and families of mid-coast Maine. Its recipients have gone on to pursue degrees in nursing and other fields at several local universities.

Dr. Whitten established Belfast Pediatrics in 1976. He graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1961 and received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. Dr. Whitten works with Dr. Joseph Anderson and Dr. Jan Gorton at Belfast Pediatrics, with offices at Waldo County General Hospital.
