With four teams remaining in the Midcoast Babe Ruth League baseball playoffs heading into the semifinal round Thursday, the night was supposed to end with two teams earning wins and moving on to play in Saturday’s championship final.

However, these playoffs have proved to be anything but conventional, as there still were three teams in contention when the sun finally set Thursday night.

While No. 2 Rockport Automotive (14-1) shut out No. 6 Belfast (6-7) 5-0 to earn a spot in the final on Saturday, July 9 at Medomak Valley High School, the Cinderella story of eighth-seeded Waldoboro (6-9) rolls on — for at least one more day — after Waldoboro and No. 5 Damariscotta (7-5-1) ended Thursday embroiled in a 9-9 tie after nine innings in a game suspended due to darkness.

The game will continue Saturday, July 9 at 1 p.m. at Medomak Valley High School starting with the top of the 10th inning with Waldoboro — the away team — at-bat.

The winner will then face No. 2 Rockport Automotive immediately following the conclusion of the game — for the league crown.

The quarterfinals saw three of top four seeds in the tournament fall Wednesday, with all four games ending early due to varying accounts of thunder, lightning and heavy rain.

Waldoboro held a 5-3 lead over Damariscotta heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before the “hosts” tied the game. Waldoboro later took a 9-7 lead in the top of the ninth inning, while Damariscotta again rallied for two in the bottom of the frame, forcing the umpires to suspend play.

Robbie Flint went seven innings on the hill for Waldoboro, while Ryan Ripley tossed two innings in relief. Ripley also will take the hill for Waldoboro in the continuation Saturday.

The following is a recap of the semifinal between Rockport Automotive and Belfast:

No. 2 Rockport Automotive 5, No. 6 Belfast 0 … At Rockport Thursday, the hosts got a sensational effort on the mound from hurler Caleb McFarland as the highest remaining seed earned a berth in Saturday’s championship game.

McFarland struck out a whopping 14 batters, while walking only one and allowing two hits — one single each to Belfast’s Alex Flagg and Drew Nealey. Flagg also stole a base for Belfast, while Sam Kulikowski drew a seventh-inning walk.

Zavier Roman tossed 4 1/3 innings on the hill for Belfast, allowing four hits and four walks. Matt Smith allowed three hits and walked one over the final 1 1/3 innings of play.

Leading Rockport Automotive at the plate were Chandler Crans (single, 3 runs, 4 stolen bases), Sean Pierce (single, RBI), Cailan Schecter (single, 2 RBIs), Isaac Filderman (2 singles, run), Ryan Pierce (2 singles, RBI), McFarland (walk, 2 stolen bases) and Justin Stearns (walk).

In the first inning, Chandler Crans reached on an error and later scored on Sean Pierce’s RBI-single, while the hosts scored one run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. The hosts added two more runs in the fifth on Sean Pierce’s RBI-ground out and an RBI-single from Schecter.
