Seventh-eight well-conditioned athletes and five teams competed in the sixth annual Hope Triathlon July 16 at Hobbs Pond, with the day proving to be both perfect in terms of weather, and exciting with a new course record being set.

Stephen Judice, 40, of Dayton finished the triathlon course, which included a quarter-mile swim, a 13-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run. Judice clocked in at one hour, four minutes and seven seconds, shattering the former record set by Ed McDevitt of Boulder, Colo. (1:05:32) in 2008.

Judice bested Scott Layton of Rockport, who finished in second place for the second straight year, who also beat McDevitt’s old mark with a time of 1:04:31.

Lincolnville’s Andrea Wilhelm, 31, was the top female finisher in eighth place with a mark of 1:13:02.

Peter Galloway and Will Galloway were first amongst the five teams competing in the event, clocking in with a time of 1:21:14.

Nearly $3,000 was raised for the St. Bernard’s Soup Kitchen. A children’s fun-run was also held for the event, which raised $127 for Hope Elephants.
