Hundreds were drawn to the city’s waterfront over the past weekend, with families taking in everything from traditional highland heavy games to the highly anticipated U.S. National Cheese Roll Championship.

The fifth annual Maine Celtic Celebration entertained families from the evening of Friday, July 15 through Sunday afternoon, July 17, with attractions including a parade, a 5K race, live music and dancing, a Celtic dog show and more chances for good-natured competition than you could shake a caber at.

The U.S. National Cheese Roll Championship provided spectators with a series of entertaining battles based on gender and age groups.

Once the official cheese roller released the coveted dairy product at the top of the hill at Belfast Commons, competitors in each division ran, tumbled and battled for the prizes of the grass-covered cheese wheel itself, a photograph to document the victory and of course, bragging rights.
