A Belfast man who allegedly slammed his truck into a utility pole early Saturday morning, July 16 walked away from the crash scene, according to police, but did so without notifying authorities.

Dustin L. Armstrong, 27, of Belfast was summoned on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to give notice of an accident by the quickest of means. According to records at the Belfast Police Department, Armstrong was served with the summonses the day after the crash.

Armstrong was reportedly traveling on Route 141 in a 1999 Chevrolet pickup at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said, when he went off the road and struck the utility pole.

Cunningham said police received a report of the crash, but when Officer Roy Smith arrived at the scene, Armstrong was reportedly no longer with the vehicle.

Cunningham said Armstrong apparently walked away from the crash scene and went to a relative’s residence in Swanville.

When the officer located Armstrong a short time later, Cunningham said, Armstrong admitted to Smith that he was driving the truck at the time of the crash.

Armstrong is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast Tuesday, Sept. 20.
