Police are asking for assistance from the public in locating a vehicle that was caught on video at the scene of what appeared to be an attempt to steal a cash box at a local gas station.

Deputy Darrin Moody of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said police received a report of vandalism at one of the gas pumps at Swan Lake Gas in Swanville at 6 a.m. Friday, July 15.

Moody said police have since acquired images from the gas station’s video surveillance footage showing that two people in a white car with a black hood vandalized one of the three gas pumps located at the gas station. The footage indicated that the vandalism occurred at around 3:40 a.m. Friday, July 15, Moody said.

The apparent motivation for the vandalism, Moody said, was the cash box located inside the targeted pump — two of the three pumps at the gas station take credit and debit cards, while the third pump also accepts cash (much like a vending machine or a payment device at certain car washes).

“They didn’t get the money,” said Moody, who added that the gas pump itself sustained about $3,500 worth of damage.

Moody said the vehicle is believed to be an early 1990s model Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call police at 338-2040.
