While certainly not the position it hoped to be in after one game of the state tournament, many players and coaches on the Waldo County Little League 11- and 12-year-old baseball all-star squad have faced this type of adversity before and battled through it.

So, the team will try to take a page from last year’s state book and do its best to fight game to game during the rest of the double-elimination tourney played through Saturday, July 30 in Portland.

Waldo County opened the state tourney with a tough 4-3 loss to York Saturday and the locals (0-1) were scheduled to play Auburn Suburban (0-1) in an elimination game on Monday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m.

The winner of that contest will advance to play on Wednesday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. against either York (1-1) or Down East Family YMCA of Ellsworth (1-1).

Thus far in the state tourney, York beat Waldo County 4-3, Old Town nipped Auburn Suburban 8-7, Yarmouth downed York 2-1 and Old Town outlasted Down East YMCA 8-3 in 11 innings.

Waldo County will face Auburn Suburban Monday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m. and York will meet Down East Family YMCA on Tuesday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m., both elimination games.

The host of the state tourney is Bayside (Portland) of District 6 and games are played on Loring Field at Payson Park.

In Saturday’s opening game, York nipped Waldo County 4-3. Waldo County tallied one run in each of the first, fifth and sixth innings. York scored three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth.

Waldo County’s offense was led by Barrett Grant (home run, run, RBI), Jake Black (2 singles, run), Brandon Smith (2 singles, run), Emmett Shell (single), Colby Trask (single), Kyle Moore (single) and Eric Phillips (single, RBI).

Black turned in a strong 5-hit, 2-walk, 6-strikeout complete-game effort on the mound for Waldo County.

For York, Trevor Labonte and Jack McDonald combined on the hill to allow nine hits, two walks and struck out seven.

Waldo County scored one run in the first inning as Black walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, moved to third when Max Thomas grounded out and scored on passed ball.

The locals also tallied a run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Grant and added a final run in the sixth as Smith singled, advanced to second on Moore’s groundout and scored on Phillips’ single.

York scored three runs in the fourth stanza thanks to a single by Sam Johnson, hit batter, two-run triple from Boynton Chayer and run-scoring single from Colby Todd. The winners tallied a final run in the fifth on an error, passed ball and single by Malcolm Hughes.

Matt Ford also had a double in the game for York.

Last year in the state 10- and 11-year-old tournament in Bucksport, essentially the same Waldo County squad faced York in the championship game after Waldo County had lost its first game of the tourney to Augusta and worked back through the loser’s bracket.

Last year, York edged Waldo County 6-5 in the championship of that tourney as Waldo County finished as state runners-up.
