Ever since Homer sang his tales, people have been fascinated by stories set at sea. In August, the free Friday Night Flicks movie series presented by Belfast Free Library will present three great films set on the waves. All will be shown Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the library, 106 High St.

First up Aug. 5 is “Lifeboat,” where master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock gave himself a challenge by setting an entire movie in the limited confines of a lifeboat. As a group of passengers attempt to survive the sinking of their ship by a Nazi U-Boat, the mix of personalities leads to a gripping thriller when one of their number is found to be an enemy. Tallulah Bankhead and William Bendix lead the ensemble cast.

The Halloween Nor’easter of 1991 is still remembered in New England and its most dramatic episode is told Aug. 19 in “A Perfect  Storm,” a compelling adaptation of Sebastian Junger’s bestselling book. George Clooney as Captain Billy Tyne leads the desperate crew of the fishing boat Andrea Gail as they fight the storm for their very lives. Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane and John C. Reilly also star.

Nicole Kidman made her feature film debut in the ocean-going thriller “Dead Calm,” starring alongside Sam Neill as a couple whose carefree vacation turns into a nightmare when they rescue the sole survivor of a sinking ship. Their good deed turns out to have been a very bad mistake, indeed. “Dead Calm” will be presented Aug 26.
