Like bees swarming to their hive — only these ones wore life jackets and congregated on floats and boats in Penobscot Bay — the waters inside the Rockland Breakwater were filled with young sailors plying their craft July 31 during the eighth annual Red Jacket Youth Sailing Regatta, which ran late morning to mid-afternoon.

Kevin “KC” Heyniger, waterfront programs director for the Rockland Community Sailing at the Apprenticeshop, said the regatta attracted 10 teams and 50-plus sailors racing in both one-person Optimist prams and two-person 420 sloops.

Team trophies were awarded to the first three finishers in each “A” and “B” Division, along with a coaches’ and a sportsmanship award.

This year’s event sponsors were Allen Insurance and Financial, Maritime Energy and Domino’s Pizza.

The teams scheduled to participate were Rockland Community Sailing, Rockport Boat Club, Camden Yacht Club, Northport Yacht Club, Stockton Harbor Sailing Center, Castine Yacht Club, North Haven Casino, Island Sail Vinalhaven, St. George Community Sailing and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, which was new to the event this year.

Additional information from the regatta will appear later with this story.
