On Friday, Aug. 12 Rock City’s Velvet Lounge series officially re-opens with Mike Whitehead and Friends. The music will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rock City Cafe, 318 Main St.

Musicians featured are Mike Whitehead on trumpet and flugelhorn, Xar Adelberg on bass, Tom Luther on piano and Jason Dean on drums. The combo will play a variety of jazz music from the 1940s through today. These musicians have been playing jazz together for many years and will provide a dynamic and fun musical evening.

On Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. Rock City Cafe will welcome Tango to its new location, which vocalist Kristen Burkholder and pianist Martin Gottlieb are eager to fill with their elegant, yet playful; heartfelt, yet humorous musical stylings. This piano/vocal duo has been thrilling audience members up and down the coast of Maine for six years with their renditions of the Great American Songbook. Recently voted one of the top bands in Waldo County by VillageSoup’s Best of the Best contest, Tango will bring two hours of the best songs from years gone by including “Summertime,” “And the Angels Sing,” “Too Darn Hot” and “We’re in the Money.”

As usual there is no cover charge; however, tipping the musicians is highly encouraged. The new Rock City Café combines live music, a great beer and wine selection and totally awesome food. For more information, call 594-4123.
