Belfast firefighters and police responded to a report of gas spilling onto the ground near one of the gas pumps at the Dead River Company Convenience Store on Belmont Avenue Friday morning, Aug. 5.

The report of the incident came in to the Waldo County Regional Communications Center at about 10:30 a.m. Friday. At the scene, firefighters were in the process of cleaning up what Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham described as a relatively small amount of gas that was spilled on the ground due to an error on the part of a customer.

“Somebody pulled away from the gas pumps and didn’t take the hose out,” said Cunningham.
