The fifth annual Backyard 4-on-4 Friendly Challenge, a soccer event, will be Saturday, Aug. 20. The event is open to all Maine residents, regardless of age.

The tournament was moved from June to August this year to give school coaches the opportunity to use the 4-on-4 format to fine tune their teams as they prepare for the 2011 season.

This tourney is unique because it includes teams from across the state that compete in a wide range of age brackets. “We offer the opportunity for anyone, any age, in Maine to play in our soccer tournament,” said Chris Spaulding of Windham Youth Soccer.

The event is open to youth recreation teams, youth travel teams, youth premier teams, high school teams, adult teams and family teams.

Team rosters are restricted to roster sizes of four to six players. This ensures all players are given plenty of opportunity on the field.

The tourney fee is $10 per player “instead of a team fee so coaches are able to create as many teams as they need to make it work with their roster size without worrying about running up costs,” Spaulding said.
