The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce is soliciting nominations for the 2011 Citizen of the Year for Waldo County, to be presented at the BACC 51st Annual Awards Banquet Thursday, Oct. 20 at Point Lookout Resort and Conference Center in Northport from 5-9 p.m. Nominations are not limited to residents of Belfast but may be made for anyone living in Waldo County, from Lincolnville to Unity.

Nominations are also being sought for the Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Economic Development Award, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Maritime Heritage, and Community Volunteer of the Year.

New awards have been added this year to reflect the ever-changing population of Waldo County: Green Leadership Award, Keeping Waldo County Healthy Leadership Award, Preservation Leadership Award, and Agricultural Heritage Award.

The Citizen of the Year award should recognize a person (or persons) who has made an outstanding positive impact on some facet of Waldo County during their lifetime, either by a single event or on a continuous basis. Nominees can be from any occupation, including business, education, service, medical government, work in any charitable organization, or simply a resident.

The 2010 Citizen of the Year award winner was Larry Jones.

Nomination forms for all of the awards can be obtained at the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce Office on Main Street in the Consumer Fuels building, at the Belfast Co-op, at Our Town Belfast, and at the Belfast Library.

However, nomination forms will be not required; nominations may be submitted on plain pieces of paper or emailed to the chamber at community@belfastmaine.org. The only information required will be the name of the nominee, address and phone numbers, and the reasons why the person is being nominated, including biographical and background information about the individual.

Nominations should be sent to the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce at PO Box 58, Belfast, ME 04915 no later than Friday, Sept. 9, 2011. They should be marked Award Nominations on the outside of the envelope and, preferably, a notation stating what award the nomination is being made for. Nominations can also be e-mailed to community@belfastmaine.org.

Announcements and profiles of many of the award winners will be published in advance of the annual dinner.

Award winners will be given individual awards and recognized at the annual dinner on Oct. 20, 2011.

Descriptions of BACC Annual Dinner Awards:

Citizen of the Year:

Recognizes a person(s) who has made an outstanding positive impact on some facet of Waldo County during their lifetime, either by a single event or on a continuous basis. Nominees can be from any occupation, including business, education, service, medical, government, work in any charitable organization, or simply be a resident.

Economic Development Award:

Recognizes a person(s) who clearly represents a major influence in boosting the economic vitality and economic climate in Waldo County in the prior year. This may be someone who was a catalyst for economic development or someone who contributed to economic development by added services or employment.

Business of the Year:

Recognizes a business that has demonstrated a strong growth and positive influence in the community. The award may also recognize innovation, unique methods or processes, special employee programs or services, or sustainability. The award may be made to a business owned and operated in Waldo County or one that is owned outside of the county but has a meaningful presence in Waldo County.

Small Business of the Year:

Recognizes the smaller businesses that dot Waldo County and may employ as few as one or two people. It can include a single-person business. This award should reflect something special about the business, whether it is a unique style or approach, new technology, special services, or some other criteria that distinguishes the business from other similar to it.

Non-Profit Organization of the Year:

Recognizes that many nonprofit organizations add to the economic fabric of the county as well as the significances of their own direct services. This award should reflect that the organization has displayed a strong growth, developed and maintained a reputation for organizational excellence, made a recent significant change or improvement, and/or has had a major impact on the lives of individuals within the past year.

Community Volunteer of the Year:

Recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding service as an unpaid volunteer for any organization or activity in Waldo County. The volunteer may be in a leadership role or some who has quietly but reliably performed a valuable service with little recognition. The volunteer may be someone involved in a major community activity or someone who has worked hard for a single, smaller charitable organization.

Green Leadership Award:

Recognizes an organization or business that has had a strong and positive influence in the community regarding environmental education or green economic business opportunities.

Keeping Waldo County Healthy Leadership Award:

Recognizes an organization or business that has had a strong and positive influence in the community and displayed vision and courage in advancement of the health of Waldo County

Preservation Leadership Award:

Recognizes an organization or business that has had a strong and positive influence in the community and displayed vision and courage in preserving the history of Waldo County or preserving or restoring access to public lands.

Maritime Heritage:

Honors a business, organization, or individual that makes a significant contribution in sustaining our maritime tradition. This award celebrates the importance of the maritime industry to our communities and is awarded to mark an outstanding advancement, event, or product in that category.

Agricultural Heritage:

Honors a business, organization, or individual that makes a significant contribution in sustaining our maritime tradition. This award celebrates the importance of the agriculture industry to our communities and is awarded to mark an outstanding advancement, event, or product in that category.
