Gage Newcomb of Belfast has a fish tale to tell. He won the annual mackerel tournament — cash, trophy and bragging rights — held Aug. 20 on the city’s waterfront.

Newcomb, 9, a fourth grader at Captain Albert Stevens School, also won the biggest fish trophy by landing a harbor pollack. Both fish were caught fishing from the shore.

Newcomb is the son of Linda and Craig Nash of Belfast.

Newcomb participated in “Mackerel Mania,” a winner-take-all tournament sponsored by the Belfast Parks and Recreation Department.

Registration was early Saturday morning at Heritage Park. Fishing began at 9 a.m. and continued until 4:30 p.m. The official clock was kept at the Heritage Park weigh station.

Weigh-in was 4:30 to 5 p.m. that day.
