Two local men were charged with drug offenses after police intercepted an alleged drug deal just as the duo finished crossing the footbridge on bicycles Wednesday, Aug. 24.

According to records at the Belfast Police Department, Christopher Sudsbury, 39, of Belfast was charged with possession of schedule Y drugs (Xanax), possession of schedule W drugs (Ritalin), possession of a usable amount of marijuana and trafficking in marijuana following the alleged incident.

The man who police say was with Sudsbury, 23-year-old Thomas Cross of Belfast, was summoned for possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said Thursday, Aug. 25 that as he was headed to Searsport to meet another officer at about 3 p.m. he spotted the two men on their bicycles on the footbridge. Cunningham said he thought one of the men was a person that he had been looking for in connection with an unrelated incident.

Cunningham said he called another Belfast officer and asked that he meet the two men — who were later identified as Sudsbury and Cross — at the east end of the footbridge.

Cunningham said the officer arrived at the footbridge just in time to catch Sudsbury selling a bag of marijuana to Cross.

Sudsbury is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast Tuesday, Nov. 22, while Cross is slated to appear in the same courthouse Tuesday, Sept. 20.
