Nine high school girls soccer squads — including five from the Midcoast — kick started preparation for the upcoming regular season with a day of intense preseason games.

The first annual Oceanside High School kickoff tourney was held Saturday on three fields in Thomaston. The day included periods of fog, overcast and sun — with plenty of face-paced, skilled schoolgirl soccer.

A collection of talented squads, which represented Classes A, B and C, participated, including Brewer, Searsport, Erskine Academy of South China, Medomak Valley, Camden Hills, Belfast, Lewiston, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and host Oceanside. Erskine Academy, Camden Hills and Oceanside each had two teams in the tournament.

Saturday’s tourney began at 9 a.m. and each team played five games during the day. There was a break from 11:55 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. for lunch, as well as a juggling and shootout competition.

Each game was 30 minutes running time. Traditional soccer games are 80 minutes, or two 40-minute halves.

Games were played on Sam Pendleton Field, the Oceanside practice field and the Thomaston Grammar School field.

All teams met on Pendleton Field following the final games for awards presentations.

This type of preseason event was hosted by Georges Valley High School for years and now will be carried on by Oceanside, the combination of Rockland District High School and Georges Valley.

This year’s tourney all-star team included: MCI’s Paula Anias and Eliana Bursdoll; Erskine Academy I’s Amy Phillips and Meryl Bond; Belfast’s Emma Bonneville and Jane Ouillette; Searsport Brianna Grant and Gwen Higgins; Brewer’s Cassie Braithewaite and Shannon Dapice; Camden Hills II’s Kaitlyn York and Grace Hayward; Medomak Valley’s Samantha Griffin and Amanda Henrickson-Belloquet; Erskine Academy II’s Jade Canak and Christina Belanger; Camden Hills’ Kristina Alex and Caroline Matteo; Oceanside I’s Jessie Veilleux and Jenn Denault; and Oceanside II’s Ashley Gardner and Courtney Simmons.

The second teams for each school were jayvee squads. The names of the all stars from Lewison were unavailable.

The winner of the goalie competition was Camden Hills’ Kaelyn Williams and the winner of the juggling competition was Oceanside’s Denault.

Although official results from each contest were unavailable, the schedule of games included:
