Bessie Manary Dean, wife of the late Cranston Blake Dean, and beloved mother and great-great-grandmother, died Aug. 25, 2011, at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.

Born Oct. 21, 1917, Bessie, a lifelong resident of Lincolnville, was the daughter of the late Herbert L. Heal and Fannie (Eugley) Heal. Active throughout her life, she enjoyed tending her garden, working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and baking for visiting friends and relatives. A congregant at the United Christian Church, Lincolnville, she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. She was an active member of Tranquility Grange and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was involved for many years as a volunteer with Kno-Wal-Lin and a participant in many programs of the Cooperative Extension Service. She was involved as an officer of the Union Cemetery Association. She was the first woman to fly solo in Maine, having taken lessons in Rockland.

Bessie was predeceased by three brothers, Vernon, Kendon and Roland Heal; two sisters, Selma Cilley and Muriel Richardson; and a grandson, Michael Dean.

She is survived by her sons, Herbert Dean and his wife, Francis, and James Dean and his wife, Pierrette; a daughter, Mary Caliro and her husband, Joseph; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Friends are invited to visit Tuesday, Aug. 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. at the United Christian Church, 18 Searsmont Road in Lincolnville with the Rev. Dr. Susan Stonestreet officiating. A light luncheon will be held after the service. Burial will be at Union Cemetery.
