Power has been restored to many places in Waldo County that lost it as a result of Tropical Storm Irene’s damaging winds Sunday, Aug. 28.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, just under 1,000 Central Maine Power customers in the county remained without electricity, according to a press release from the company.

Across the state, more than 67,000 CMP customers were without power as of Tuesday evening.

Most of the outages across Maine remain concentrated in the southern and western part of the state — more than 21,000 customers were in the dark in Cumberland County, while 13,836 customers were without power in York County, both figures as of Tuesday evening.

Outage numbers began climbing Sunday morning as the leading edge of Irene, by then a tropical storm, reached the state’s southern tip. By noon Sunday, 19,000 customers were without power, largely in York and Cumberland Counties.

CMP said its first concern is for public safety, so crews worked throughout the day Sunday to make sure any downed lines were de-energized and properly grounded to protect the public. Crews were able to restore power to customers in some cases, but new outages outpaced the rate of repairs.

The company estimates that more than 275,000 accounts were affected by the storm as it passed along the western edge of the company’s service area on Sunday, according to its press release. Customers continued to report new outages as of Monday morning.

Extra lineworkers and tree crews from Maine and Canada joined the effort this morning, according to CMP. The company said these workers focused Monday on assessing the damage on a system of more than 25,000 miles of lines and 640,000 poles.

Crews will also make aerial inspections of the company’s transmission lines, and work to restore service to all of its substations, according to the press release.

As of Tuesday evening, CMP said it expects to complete all storm repairs by late Thursday night.
