The Belfast cross-country squads started the campaign with a bang in a Sept. 2 meet at Winslow High School. The brightest spotlight for the Lions shone on Luis Mauser, who finished first, by less than a second, among 51 runners.

Mauser, a sophomore, won the boys race by crossing the 3.1-mile course in 17:43.35, with Winslow’s Nick Shuckrow second at 17:44.21.

In the girls race, Winslow’s Molly Schassberger finished first in 21:00.50 among 41 runners. Maria Swebilius was the first Lion, finishing 17th at 26:08.68.

The boys team scores were: Erskine Academy of South China 57, Winslow 58, Belfast 68, Gardiner 69, Morse of Bath 85 and Skowhegan no score. The girls team scores were: Winslow 24, Morse 36, Erskine Academy 76, Belfast 90 and Gardiner and Skowhegan no score.
