The Mount View football team boasts its most senior-laden squad since the inception of the program a few years ago and the Mustangs hope to make a name for themselves this season in Little Ten Conference Class C.

And the Mustangs certainly got a good start on that Saturday afternoon.

Hosting defending Eastern Class C champion Stearns of Millinocket would be a daunting task, but one the Mustangs met head-on Saturday at Larrabee Field to kick off the regular season.

The Mustangs were not intimidated by the moment and went toe-to-toe with the Minutemen, with those efforts giving the hosts a 14-6 victory over Stearns, which competed in the state Class C title game a mere 10 months ago.

Craig Nealley rushed for 91 yards on seven carries and scored both touchdowns for the ‘Stangs (1-0), while Jay Babin rushed for a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to help seal the deal for the hosts.

Other offensive standouts for Mount View were Will Nunn (47 yards on 8 carries), Babin (79 yards on 15 carries), Ryan St. Clair (15 yards on 5 carries) and Joe White (16 yards on 2 carries). Babin, the team’s signal caller, completed 2-of-7 passes for eight yards, one each to Bobby Porter and Taylor Reynolds.

The Mount View defense also proved stellar on the day, holding Stearns to 120 total yards (109 on the ground) and an average of just over two yards per carry.

Nealley put the Mustangs on the board with a 47-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give the hosts a 6-0 lead after the conversion attempt failed. The Minutemen responded and tied the game 6-6 after kick return for a touchdown in the third quarter, but Nealley scampered in from 25 yards out in the fourth quarter to give the hosts an advantage they would not relinquish.

Leading Mount View’s defense were Mike Robinson (solo tackle, 9 assisted tackles, quarterback sack), Jake Blanchette (solo, 10 assists), Nealley (solo, 10 assists), Mark Dollop (3 solos, 5 assists, fumble recovery, interception), Babin (4 solos, 2 assists, 2 sacks), Andrew Gibbs (2 solos, 5 assist, sack), St. Clair (2 solos, 2 assists), Reynolds (6 assists), Ben Korman (solo, 5 assists), Ricky Moulton (solo, 2 assists), Joe White (solo, 2 assists), Tyler McCormick (4 assists), Chris Spaulding (3 assists), Justin Sabin (solo) and Clint Spaulding (5 assists).
