While lack of electricity from the school to operate the scoreboard timer and computers forced a short delay in the start of Friday’s high school cross-country meet, when the runners finally did hit the trail they certainly demonstrated plenty of power — as well as speed and intestinal fortitude in hot conditions.

And there were many exciting individual battles, none more exciting than the one between Camden Hills’ Ben Trapani and Belfast’s Luis Mauser in a boys race that came down to the wire. After a final sprint, the sophomores were separated by a second at the finish, with Trapani winning.

In the girls race, Camden Hills teammates Willow Parker and Brittany Bowman battled across most of the 3.1-mile course before the freshman outdistanced the sophomore at the end.

The meet was hosted by Belfast Area High School at Troy Howard Middle School.

The Camden Hills girls and Medomak Valley boys cruised to team victories, with the Windjammers continuing to push for a perfect score, which would be 15 if they had the top five scoring runners. Camden Hills finished with 21, with five runners among the top nine.

The boys team scores were: Medomak Valley 51, Erskine Academy of South China 55, Belfast 85, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 95, Morse of Bath 103, Camden Hills 107 and Oceanside no score.

The girls team scores were: Camden Hills 21, Morse 44, Medomak Valley 87, Belfast 108, Erskine Academy 111 and Oceanside and North Haven no score.

Camden Hills finished with a total time for its top seven runners of 1:49:43.85, with an average runner’s time of 21:56.77. Medomak Valley was at 2:08:22.94 and 25:40.59 and Belfast at 2:16:01.48 and 27:12.30.

For the boys, Medomak Valley finished at 1:37:11.24 and 19:26.25, Belfast at 1:40:57.77 and 20:11.56 and Camden Hills 1:44:20.84 and 20:52.17.
