A Belfast man who police say had been married for less than a week was found dead in his bed Wednesday morning, Sept. 21.

Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said police were called to the report of an unattended death around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, and when officers arrived, they found the body of 24-year-old Dennis Craig.

Craig’s wife had called to report that she awoke and found her husband lying in bed next to her and that she believed he was dead, Cunningham said.

Craig was taking some medications that were prescribed to him at the time of his death, but Cunningham said police do not know if the medicines played a role in his death.

Craig’s body has since been transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for an autopsy, according to Cunningham.

“The cause of death is still unknown, but 24-year-olds don’t just die in their sleep,” he said.
