The Troy Howard Middle School football team traveled to the Camden Snow Bowl Sept. 13 still licking its wounds from a lopsided loss suffered in last season’s Eastern Maine Middle School Football League meeting with Five Town Football, which draws from Camden, Rockport, Hope, Lincolnville and Appleton.

But this year proved different. When all was said and done, Troy Howard had hung on for a 14-6 win. After allowing about 50 points last year to Five Town Football, a victory was an exciting outcome for the young Lions.

With the game scoreless at halftime, the Lions came out roaring as Lucien Gordley-Smith ran into the end zone for the game’s first touchdown of the second half. Marlin Hansen added two points with a field goal to make the score 8-0.

In the third quarter, Alex Canning broke through the pack with a two-yard scoring run for the Lions, followed by a failed field goal attempt to leave the score 14-0 in the Lions’ favor.

Five Town threatened in the fourth quarter with a score but was unable to add the extra point to leave the score 14-6.

As the final seconds ticked away, Lion Zach Darres intercepted a pass and returned the ball about 35 yards. That essentially halted any comeback attempt by the hosts.
