Ruth A. Smith, 79, formerly of Swanville, died Sept. 23, 2011, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Ruth was born Jan. 13, 1932 in Swanville, to Percy and Gladys Larrabee. She devoted her entire life giving to others and expecting nothing in return. She is described by many as an extraordinary and selfless person.

She is survived by her four daughters, Sandy Young of Brunswick (previously married to Dana Messer), Virginia Young Dudley of Brunswick (married to Brent), Sherry Young Tremblay of Brunswick (married to Russ), and Lisa Young Bumgardner of West Bath (married to Denton); her brother, Owen Larrabee of Swanville (married to Sandra); her grandchildren, Jeanelle Dudley Dellorusso, Harley Messer Morgan, Grant Tremblay; and her great-grandchildren, Ava Dellorusso and Isaac Morgan. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews who considered her a very special aunt, including John Larrabee of Davidson, N.C. (married to Cheryle Payson), whom she raised from a young age.

With profound sadness over our loss, but with immense admiration for the role she played in each of our lives, and the lives of her extended family and friends, her family will host a Celebration of Life gathering at Swanville Community Church on Saturday, Dec.17 from 2-4 p.m.

We hope to see as many of her friends as possible there so we can all share memories of a truly remarkable wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and lady. We would love to hear from family members or friends who may have either a story to share or some little fact that will make this celebration extra special. Please contact Jeanelle Dellorusso at 781-249-7133 or email ruthies4girls@gmail.com.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Swanville Community Church, 15 Town House Road, Swanville, ME 04915, designating the Ruth Smith Memorial Fund.
